FYI: Khalid cites his mother as his biggest musical influence.
19-year-old singer and songwriter Khalid’s debut album, American Teen, comes off like some dream combination of all that’s best about soul music, indie rock, pop and post-hip hop R&B. It’s the sound of everything America could be and should be for it’s youth, and evokes the unrestrained joy of being young with a world of opportunity and experiences ahead. Or put more simply, “from beginning to end, it’s the story of your average teenager going through a typical day in high school,” according to it’s author.
For such a young man, Khalid has already made an incredible mark. His debut single, “Location,” which was released last summer, was a major hit and whet people’s appetites for the full length. When American Teen was released in March, it debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 album charts, and has garnered rave reviews. Not bad for a kid that just graduated high school.
Khalid’s musical education began at home, where his mother cultivated a love of music and sang around the house for her baby boy. Though she had her own musical ambitions, her military career took the family from Germany to upstate New York to El Paso, Texas in Khalid’s senior year of high school. Though relocating was difficult, the singer poured his anxieties, frustrations and despair into his music, and in the end emerged stronger and more comfortable in his own skin.
American Teen was born of these troubles and also the personal triumphs that came from sharing his feelings with his new friends. “With this album, I want to show everyone it’s okay to have emotions, it’s okay to be happy, and it’s okay to be sad,” says Khalid. Now, his biggest worries will be what songs to play on tour. He’ll be opening for Travis Scott throughout the spring, before headlining his own American Teen tour later in the summer, saying in anticipation, “I’m looking forward to how kickass 2017 is going to be.” For more from Khalid, keep checking Ticketmaster Insider’s New Music Favorites for the latest exclusive content and videos.
