Not many pop stars can show up to the VMAs in full denim, strut down the Victoria Secret runway, and dress up like a Cheeto for Halloween – all while staying on fleek. Katy Perry can do all that, and so much more.
It was recently announced that the “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls” singer would be performing the Super Bowl Halftime Show at Super Bowl XLIX. Katy is known for her colorful, over-the-top costumes and elaborate set designs, and KatyCats everywhere are yowling to see her bring her empowering anthems to the Super Bowl stage.
Now, let’s take a walk down memory lane and reminisce with some of our favorite Katy Perry music videos and moments.
The intro to “Dark Horse” is entrancing and perfectly sets the tone for the dark, sultry nature of the Juicy J-featured track. The song was released in 2013 on the album Prism, and its catchy combination of hip hop, trap, and pop struck a chord with listeners — it quickly became one of the world’s top selling singles of all time. The song’s kaleidoscopic music video was set in Memphis, Egypt, and features all the rainbow tombs, pink sand dunes, and candy-coated Egyptian iconography a fan could hope for.
“Roar” was another highlight of Katy’s multi-platinum 2013 album Prism , and it came with an equally impressive music video. We love singing along to lyrics like “I Stood for nothing, so I fell for everything…” and hollering out a loud roar during the chorus. The video features Katy in “Junglescope” (lol) and sees her getting in touch with nature in all sorts of, well, unexpected ways.
Part of Me
When the single “Part of Me” was released in 2012, it touched the hearts of fans around the world. Many of us could relate to the heartache Katy expresses in her emotional lyrics, and the video really drives the song’s empowering message home. After catching her boyfriend in the act and breaking up with him, she joins the military, ultimately emerging stronger than before and better off for the experience. Katy is known for her powerful messages, and this song and video really hit home in a big way.
Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
“Last Friday Night” was released on Katy’s third studio album, 2010’s massively popular Teenage Dream. The music video for the song sees Katy embracing her nerdy alter-ego “Kathy Beth Terry”, who wakes up to find remnants of a massive party surrounding her. It’s a lot of fun, and a perfect glimpse into Katy’s quirkier side.
“Firework” is a soaring, undeniably catchy song about self-empowerment and expressing one’s true colors. It was the top-selling single from her 2010 album Teenage Dream, and for good reason. The music video takes place in Budapest, features incredible dancing, and won Video of the Year at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Fans can expect to see plenty more fireworks when Katy brings the house down at Super Bowl XLIX.
Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
And who could forget the incredible 2010 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show where Katy owned the stage with creative sets, fun choreography, and gorgeous costumes.
