Several artists have been paying tribute to the legendary Chris Cornell since his sudden passing. Bands including U2 and Metallica have dedicated songs to Cornell, as well as others artists like Ryan Adams, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cage the Elephant and Incubus have performed Chris Cornell covers at their live shows. “He taught me how to be heavy and look for beauty at the same time,” Incubus singer Brandon Boyd told the KROQ Weenie Roast audience last weekend.

The Soundgarden vocalist was found dead in his Michigan hotel room last Wednesday night, after the band’s show at Fox Theater in Detroit. The 18-song set was followed by an encore, consisting of Rusty Cage and ‘Slaves & Bulldozers’, which merged with a haunting refrain of Led Zeppelin’s ‘In My Time of Dying’.

Chris Cornell’s passing leaves a palpable mark on the music scene. Among his close friends, Audioslave bandmate Tom Morello has been coping with this profound loss through writing poetry and keeping Chris’ memory alive through music.

Poem by Tom Morello:

You’re a prince, you’re a snare, you’re a shadow
You’re twilight and star burn and shade
You’re a sage, you’re a wound shared, you’re masked
You’re a pillar of smoke, you’re a platinum heart
You’re a brush fire, you’re caged, you’re free
Your vision pierces, you do not see
You are pieces strewn on the hillside
You’re open armed, you’re armed, you’re true
You’re a revealer of visions, you’re the passenger, you’re a never fading scar
You’re twilight and star burn and shade
You’re the secret veiled, you’re the secret revealed, you’re surrounded no more
You’re not there, now you’re always here
Youre a handsome groom, a loving father, a haunted stairwell
You’re the clear bell ringing, the mountains echo your song
Maybe no one has ever known you
You are twilight and star burn and shade

In addition, Tom shared some of his favorite videos of Chris. “Made a list of some of my favorite Chris Cornell videos—from Soundgarden badassery to epic Audioslave in Cuba to acoustic duetting in a tiny Seattle night club,” Morello wrote. “Enjoy and keep Chris in your memory.”

Soundgarden’s drummer Matt Cameron has posted a short, heartfelt note. “My dark knight is gone,” he wrote on Facebook. “Thank you for the incredible outpouring of kindness and love.”

The beloved Soundgarden vocalist will be buried at a private funeral service at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Friday, May 26.
